The latest videogame adventure for Goku and the gang is Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, which goes back to the early days of DBZ to offer an RPG experience that retells the events of the anime and manga. But the game formerly known as Project Z won’t just be the same story that Dragon Ball fans already know – creator Akira Toriyama says there’ll be fresh material on existing characters in the game, too. “Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is an action-RPG, full of the Dragon Ball universe,” Toriyama writes (on the official Bandai Namco Twitter). “It includes backstories that haven’t been told in the manga, and I’m sure fans will truly be able to take a deep dive into the world. It’s a fresh new take on the franchise as you relive the moment where Goku discovers his Saiyan bloodline and birth name, Kakarot.” Exactly what those “backstories” might be is unclear, but there’s a massive cast and plenty of opportunity to flesh out their stories beyond what’s been told in the original manga. Maybe we’ll finally find out what Krillin really is, and why he doesn’t have a nose – but that’s probably too much to hope for after all these years.
